The following services available to Library Members:

The library is well stocked with a large selection of books, audio and large print material for all ages and tastes, all of which is available or can be reserved if not in stock.
Borrowing a Book from the Library

Once you have your green library card, you can use it to:

  • Borrow up to 20 books for 21 days.
  • Borrow audio books for 21 days.
  • Borrow magazines.
  • Use the internet without charge.
  • Use our printing services.
  • Reserve books from other volunteer libraries in Gateshead.
  • Once borrowed, books can be renewed by bringing them back in person, or (up to four times) by telephone.

How to Use BorrowBox
Setting up BorrowBox on your device
BorrowBox allows you to download eAudio books. This service is available on a tablet, smartphone or web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Edge or Internet Explorer.
Devices compatible with BorrowBox
Tablets: iPad, iPod touch, Kindle Fire, Nexus, Hudl or any other tablet using Android
    Smartphones: Any that run on iOS or Android, such as iPhone or Samsung Galaxy.

      Search for ‘BorrowBox’ and click the ‘BorrowBox Library’ app.
        Download and install the app.

        1. When the download is complete, click ‘Open’
        2. When the BorrowBox app opens, type ‘Gateshead Library’ on the first line (Please select your library).
        3. Enter your Whickham library card number (DD ######) and your PIN number (the pin number you registered when you joined the library)
        4. Register an account with an email address and display name
        5. Agree to the terms and conditions
        6. Gateshead Libraries BorrowBox service will now be available to use

        On Amazon Kindle Fire:
        1. Download the BorrowBox app for Kindle Fire.
        2. Once you have downloaded the app, follow the steps from step 1 above.

        Setting up on a computer
          1. Go to the BorrowBox website and click the ‘Sign in’ link
          2. Enter your library card number and PIN and click ‘Sign in’
          3. Register an account with an email address, display name and agreeing to the terms and conditions – then click ‘Submit’
          4. You will be provided with information about the service, then click ‘Next’
          5. Gateshead Libraries BorrowBox service will now be available to use
            Setting up your device to download eAudio books with BorrowBox
            On a tablet or smartphone:
            Open the App or Play store

            On Amazon Kindle Fire:
            On an Amazon Kindle Fire you will need to download the BorrowBox app directly from their website rather than from the Kindle store.

            Borrowing eAudio books with BorrowBox
            On a tablet or smartphone:
            1. Open the BorrowBook App, and Log-in.
            2. Select the eAudio book you want and click ‘Borrow’, and then ‘Confirm loan’. If it is on loan to another borrower, you can reserve it by clicking ‘Reserve’ and then ‘Confirm renewal’.
            3. A message will come up saying ‘Loan successful’. Click ‘Download now’. This will give you the option to download all or select eAudio book files, and listen to the files in the app.
            4. The eAudio book will automatically expire in 3 weeks. You can renew it if no one else has reserved it, by clicking the ‘Renew’ button on the ‘My Loans’ view.
            5. You can also return an eAudio book early by clicking ‘Return’ next to the book title.

            On a computer:
            1. Go to the BorrowBox website, sign in and find an eAudio book through the search bar or browse categories by clicking ‘eAudiobooks’ next to ‘Start’.
            2. Select the eBook you want and click ‘Borrow’, and then click ‘Confirm eAudiobook loan’. If it is on loan to another borrower, you can reserve it by clicking ‘Reserve’ and then ‘Confirm renewal’.
            3. You will be able to ‘Download complete eAudiobook’ or download it in parts. The files will be MP3 format.
            4. Find the eAudio book files on your computer and open them in a program that plays MP3 files.
            5. The eAudio book will automatically expire in 3 weeks (the same time period as for borrowing from your library). You can renew it if no one else has reserved it, by clicking the ‘Renew’ button on the ‘My Account’ page.
            6. You can also return an eAudio book early by clicking ‘Return’ next to the book title, and deleting the files from your computer.

            Notes:
            • You can search by book title or author. Not all titles are available but there are many.
            • You are allowed up to 10 e books at any one time (although if you have one reserved this counts as 1 of your 10.)
            • Once you have finished reading the book or want to return it you can easily do that. When you log back into BorrowBox it shows you all the books out and beside each you have the choice of cancelling it. You can also see a list of previously selected e books to help prevent you choosing 1 you’ve read before.
            • The number of e books that you have does not effect the number of ordinary books that you can take from Whickham library.

            Use of Computers and the Internet

            The library has a number of computers for library members aged 8 years and over. If you're not a member, it's easy to join. All you need is something with your name and address on, such as a utility bill or bank statement and we'll do the rest.
            Printing from PC:
            Printing from the library PC's is available in both colour and black & white up to A3 size, a small fee is charged, to cover the maintenance and running costs of the machines, (see charges below)

            If you should need any help just ask one of the volunteers.

            Fax and Photocopying:
            Fax and photocopying facilities are available, a small fee will be charged to cover the costs of maintenance and running the machines, (see charges below)
            WE CAN HELP WITH YOUR COPYING
            Hire of Library Community Room

            The room is equipped with tables and chairs, with electric points for connection of laptops and audio-visual equipment. There is a large projector screen on one wall.

            Toilet facilities (including disabled toilet) are available. There is plenty of nearby public parking.

            Refreshments can be made available by request.

            BORROWING BOOKS IS FREE
            Library Charges
            Library charges for the loan of books - from 1st April 2019

            These charges will be raised against a member of the Whickham library to whom the following may apply:

            Prepaid reservation service (non-refundable):

            Books on loan or on order:

            Adults:  £0.80p each book
            Older people:  £0.55p each book
            Young people (under 16):  £0.30p each book


            Books on shelves in the other volunteer libraries:

            Adults:  £0.30p each book
            Older people:  £0.30p each book
            Young people (under 16): FREE

            Other Charges
            1. Overdue Charges

            • Older people: £0.11p  each book each day (maximum £4.60 each book)
            • Young people (under 16):  No charge
            • Adults :  £0.20p each book each day (maxumum £9.25 each book)

            2. Loss of Ticket charges:

            • Replacement charge for lost library cards:  £2.30p
            • A charge will be made for lost or damaged items
            Library charges for the use of computers, printing, copying and FAX from 1st April 2019
            1. The use of the library computers:

            • Free of charge - Library membership required

            2. Charges for photocopying and computer printouts:

            • A4 black & white - 10p per sheet
            • A4 colour - 50p per sheet
            • A3 black & white - 20p per sheet
            • A3 colour - 90p per sheet

            3. Use of the Fax machine:

            Outgoing UK:

            £1.10 for first A4 sheet and £0.90p for each additional sheet

            Outgoing International:

            • Band 1-6:  £1.50 each A4 sheet
            • Band 7-13:  £2.10 each A4 sheet
            • Incoming Fax:  £1.30 each A4 sheet
